Apache wont start under Windows Vista

This happens when I try to run it:



A similar error appears when trying to run the portscan app.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this?

Lucky you! I can't get that far.

But be aware that Vista has some delicate tuning built in. You are probably getting the same message about Explorer - if the OS doesn't get a signal pronto, it decides its an error...

I have XAMPP on a thumb drive, and we are not getting too far at present

that happened to me a lot.

What to do:

1. Right click the control panel (xampp control panel)
2. Hit run as Administrator
3. Accept the warning
4. Now you should be able to run everything except filezilla (Vista don't like it running)

Have you manually added FileZilla to the firewall exceptions?

I have had zero problems with FileZilla but I also

Disabled Windows Firewall (My Router's firewall is good enough for me).
Always log in with an Administrator Account
Turn off User Access Control.

There is an inherent trade-off between usability and security, and some may not be comfortable turning running their systems the way I do. But for me its the only way to make Vista a reasonable replacement for XP.
