Did XAMPP cause all this?

Postby night-coder » 06. April 2007 10:00

Hi,

I just installed XAMPP on Windows with XP. XP is fully updated.

I also run ZoneAlarm and AVG Anti-Virus on this box.

After installation of XAMPP I suddenly had vsmon.exe shutdown. This is the main prgram for the ZoneAlarm Security Center. I had a message displayed that said that vsmon.exe was terminated by another program in an unusual way.

I also could not launch AVG Test Center and got some weird message.

I also could not launch my "Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Control Panel.

I also could not access any emails or any page on the internet.

I also kept getting messages that Windows do not have enough system resources to execute any XAMPP function I tried to perform.

I have a brand new dual-core pentium with 512 meg RAM.

I restarted Windows and everything seems to be functioning fine right now. I am currently running a full virus scan and so far I see AVG telling me that user32.dll was changed.

I did start http://localhost and everything looks fine here as well. I am just concerned about this strange set of events mentioned above. Was this XAMPP that caused all this? Should I be concerned?

Thanks for your help.

I just installed 2 different versions of XAMPP (1.6.0a and 1.5.4) in two physical machines and 3 virtual machines without anything like that happening. The virtual machines only have 256 MB of memory.

I am guessing something else broke your system.

If it were my PC I would do virus scans, spyware scans, check the memory with memtest86 ..... regular general troubleshooting stuff.

Iwent and modified somepermission in ZA rto see if it would make a difference. I do have issues from time to time wiht the Control panel starting Mysql (ports are opened, i checked).

I found this int he apache log

and am wondering if the dev/null is causing issues. I am running on a windows machine and thought that might be causing a problem. obviously something else causes the error to start this cycle but...any port in a storm.

i had adjusted some program controls in zonealarm to see if i could get it to work as not having a firewall is not an option. Same thing occurred. It seems the vsmon.exe error is a precurser to the pv.exe error.

FYI I have only run XAMPP under Windows XP Pro SP2, Windows XP Media Center 2005 and Windows Vista, never tried running it on XP Home.
