XAMPP on Linux SUSE

Hi,

I have recently installed Linux SUSE on a dell machine to get a better look into Linux and the open source environment in general. My next mission is to install the AMP package to have a fully LAMP environment operating in my office. Since I have been an extensive Windows user, I am exploring the option of deploying some of the smaller websites onto an LAMP environment as a trial. I downloaded the xampp-linux-1.6.tar.gz onto the desktop and I read the installations from http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html#377 which asked me to go Linux Shell and type the followings:

tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.6.tar.gz -C /opt

I am still having trouble getting around this installation. Since I have been working with windows, I'd like to ask you all, kindly, to help me with a step-by-step process as of it was for a 10 year old for me to better understand the procedure and the process.

First, I am having permission problem extracting the files to /opt folder. I right clicked on the opt folder and everything is grayed out.

You must do this as root, right?
