installing tidy on linux -- again

hello lampp friends.

i've searched the forum and found several mentions of people trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to instal and activate missing php extensions, including tidy.

i'd be grateful (as well as other english-speaking users of lampp, i'm sure), if somebody could give us a short synopsis of what goes where etc...

i desperately need tidy, but a general advice on how to activate php extensions without recompiling the whole php would be much appreciated.
