Apache Service Module bug - can't turn Apache service off!

Postby Turfman » 15. March 2007 13:54

This has been driving me crazy for the past 3 days so I need some help. I've installed Xampp 1.6.0a on my local computer running Windows XP. Even though I did not select the Apache Service option during installation, when I open the Control Panel the Apache Service box is checked. I've tried to uninstall apache service by unchecking the box but the check remains in the box and will not uninstall the Apache service. I tried going into service settings and that doesn't help either.

I have tried reinstalling Xampp, using batch files to start and stop the apache service, even went into the registry to remove possible components from conflicting applications like PHPHOME but nothing seems to work.

The Xampp Control panel still shows the apache service box checked and if I click "start" I get the error message "ERROR: Apache service not started [-1].

Has anyone experienced this problem and, if so, did you find a solution?

Thanks

Hmm, I have exactly the opposite problem. I want it installed as a service, and whatever I do the checkbox in the control panel won't stay clicked. Other than that, my installation works fine.

I want it as a service because without it, the zend-platform installer keeps complaining that it can't restart the web server on it's own because it's not installed as a service, so I should do it manually. I do so, but at the end it errors out and won't work.

By the way, it does get started automatically on boot by windows. I thought that's what being installed as a service was all about, so I'm baffled.

Here's the error log on startup:

EDIT: By the way, I've reinstalled several times, and before the last one I uninstalled, cleaned the registry of any mention of "xampp" or "apache", and made sure the xampp directory was gone. Right now it's a clean install with nothing changed, v 1.0.6a

Hmm, reformatting is not an option for me. Where do you find older copies of xampp?

I have a similar problem cant start the service get the error message: Apache is running and i couldn't stop apache.

had to go to:
apache control panel
settings (top right button)
smc
and stop it in the windows services list.

check the service box and restart apache (this seems to work 1 time in 5)

my xampp seems to have started totaly ignoring php as well and just gives me lots of warnings on the ie page, i have tried clicking on the admin button on the control panel (more to see if it is my bad scripting) but it's not even finding it's own php files that are there where they should be.

any ideas.

Same service problems here as well

I am installing in a virtual machine starting with a snapshot of a clean install of XP Pro SP2 with Windows Updates, Windows Firewall Disabled and no other changes.

I reinstalled multiple times with multiple settings and spent way to much time trying to figure this one out.

For me the Control Panel always shows the exact opposite of what the true service installation status is.

I am giving up and installing a older version of XAMPP, until a new version is released.
