Portable installations - databases

Hi all,

I need to be able to sync up files and transfer back and forth from home and work so I can develop in both places.

I have no problem with the files but I am constantly having to update the home or office databases with backups from one or the other.

Where are the databases (MySQL) kept? Can I simply make a copy of that directory and move it from place to place and have it work with both the home and office xampp installations? Are the databases portable?
