How to connect to a database after installatio

I have install xampp. I can get both apache and mysql to start up as services, but I can not connect mysql to any of the databases that came with the download. When I view the localhost in a browser and check status it says mysql is deactivated. When I first installed it the mysqlAdmin told me there was no odbc driver so I installed the odbc drive it was missing. I have replace the ntwdblib.dll with a later version... I have looked at the readme file: I do not understand how to perform this:
"you can connect the MySQL-Server with: mysql_connect("localhost","root","");"

What am I missing?

yes, I can see mysqld.exe in the taskmanager

IMHO with XAMPP this should be "mysqld-nt.exe" (installation and start as service)

Can you check with "xampp-portcheck.exe" if the correct MySQL server is started?

OK, MySQL from XAMPP is running.

- This is a new (no upgrade) installatiion of XAMP?
- What is the error message in the cd database demo?

- How have you installed XAMPP (exact steps)?
