Permissions

New to Linux.
Have loaded debian and them XAMPP.
Servers work fine.
How do I change permissions so I can load files into /opt/lampp/htdocs ?
I have given my user account root permissions but can't get things to load into directory. I did manage through root terminal to create a directory in /htdocs/, but I can't use the file manager to move files there.

probably a basic thing ... but none of the documentation for XAMPP addresses this issue.

Thanks
