Solaris 10 Installation - Some Minor Nits

Postby bnelson » 15. November 2006 14:18

I have just installed XAMPP on Solaris 10 and I must say that I was impressed with the process. It was very easy and so far I have not had any problems. I will begin migrating/testing some of my sites to the new installation shortly and will let you know if I find anything during the process.

Since this is beta software, I wanted to provide some recommendations that you might find useful. Nothing major, just some nits.

1) The Welcome page contains the following:

"If you want to start programming PHP or Perl (or whatever ;) please take a look at the XAMPP manual first and get more information about your XAMPP installation."

When you click on the XAMPP manual link, you are taken to the http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html page. This is incorrect for the Solaris installation. The correct link should be: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-solaris.html (which I found manually).

2) I may have missed this somewhere, but I could not easily determine the username/password for the phpMyAdmin utility. I had to go out to the web and with some trial and error, I found that the username was "root" and the password was a generic one that I entered earlier. It would be nice if there were a username/passwords section in the online documentation page.

3) It would be nice if there was a link on the XAMPP main menu that linked directly to the Apache Friends forum. This would allow easier feedback from newbies like myself.

I will continue to post things that I find while playing with it on Solaris 10.

Basically development for Solaris with Xampp is dead. There has not been anything new for quite some time.

I've still got it running on a few Solaris 10 boxes in zones and it works well, but is is quickly getting outdated.

I've had to build from scratch for Solaris 10 x86 since there was never a release for that.

Hey krelvinaz,

not quite right.
There is an updated version available in the beta area.
See here:

@bnelson:
Thanks for your feedback.
For bugs even if they are only minor as "wrong links" etc, please use http://bugs.xampp.org

That is a pleasant surprise.

I can and will give both a try and provide feedback shortly.

I think the product is great. I've got several places that I can test both the Sparc and X86 versions from if needed.
