password after install Blocked ports

I'm a jolly (or maybe not so jolly) Green Newbie to Apache and I'm having some problems on install. The greatest of which is logging into localhost to gain entrance to the Apache GUI. It's asking me for a username and password, which I don't know how to set up. (Gotta be easy, right?) Since I don't use any passwordws on this XP system, I have no idea how to log on.

Secondly, on install, both my port 80 for Apache and my FTP port are blocked. (or so it says on install). How do I access and open these ports in XP?

I'm also trying to set up XAMPP on Linux MEPIS at work and having a rough time there, but I'll save that for the Linux forum.

I've spent the last year learning XHTML and CSS, and now I'm trying to get a handle on PHP, MySQL and Apache (with a little help from Sams Teach Yourself.)

Any direction for a complete newbie would be greatly appreciated.

To check what is blocking your ports first run:
xampp\xammp-portcheck.exe

For a successful XAMPP install all ports should show Free.

Then disable or change the ports of the offenders.

Skype and IIS (Microsofts Internet Information Service) and Firewalls are the main culprits on port 80 and 443.
Another FTP server or a firewall could be blocking port 21.

Check the error log for clues.
xampp\apache\logs\error.log

XAMPP does not like to do a default install if other servers etc. are using any of the ports that it requires and will tell you so.

Once you can get to the XAMPP welcome page:
http://localhost
click on Security and follow the link to set up your user/passes.

The user/pass you are getting at the moment is not from XAMPP as out of the box you will be able to access http://localhost without a user/pass combination.

Fix the problem with the ports and your user/pass issue may be ended.
