mercury starttls error

Hi I am trying to configure mercury and after I or anyone sends a email I Keep on getting a error. the error code is: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a starttls command first q15sm2002350qbq
how do I fix this?
I am using smtp.gmail.com in the mercury smtp c module
