MySQL with XAMPP couldn't work

Dear all, I need your help
I installed XAMPP on my RedHat system,
but seems MySQL fail when xampp start...

in status, it just tell me MySQL doesn't run.

I tried to execute mysql under bin
it give me the error message:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

how could I do?

Im having the same problem, I have been researching this and it seems to be a problem with a missing mysql.sock that should be in /opt/lampp/var/mysql/ but isent. Eather that or a permission / password probelm, if anyone can help please do.

HELLO? is anyone here, I have got the same error on 1.5.2 on SUSE linux, which is whierd becuse 1.5.2 worked on mandrive linux ...

MEH! I found the problem, just run /opt/lampp/sbin/mysqld as a regular user, not root it will make the sock for you
