Creating a subdomain..?

Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Do i need to add to my DNS that the subdomain must go to my ipadress?

example: if i set sub1.stoll.nu on my server as above. do i need to set an A record to my domain name?

i was two days offline...

So....
look, if you have a Wildcard A record in your DNS.
this Wildcard is for forwarding all request *.stoll.nu

This is my httpd.conf file:

is there anything wrong in there?

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program/xampp/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 83.227.184.134/:80
Listen 80

# However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can

Ok i find this, that make me a little bit confused.

# DocumentRoot: The directory out of which you will serve your
# documents. By default, all requests are taken from this directory, but
# symbolic links and aliases may be used to point to other locations.
#
DocumentRoot "C:/Program/xampp/htdocs"

#
# Each directory to which Apache has access can be configured with respect
# to which services and features are allowed and/or disabled in that
# directory (and its subdirectories).
#
# First, we configure the "default" to be a very restrictive set of
# features.
#
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
deny from all #<<---- this here you blocked ALL request at this point for /xampp/htdocs
</Directory>

Ok... now this will override by the /conf/extra/httpd-vhost.conf

(i m thinking, i will see a logikal answer for this...)

ok...

The Last error says 403 = Forbidden

Now make the last testing from my side, please...

at first look httpd.conf (see above the red sign) and change it to
Deny from none
Allow from all <<---add this please..

now to httpd-vhost.conf, please comment the VHOST
sub1.stoll.nu and sub2.stoll.nu
(at the beginning of this lines a " # ") after this, only the first VHOST is active !

save, restart apache.

If now your side Online without error, we are little bit broader

if this ok... change in the httpd.conf the red sign to your settings (see your listing)
save,restart apache, test...
if now your side comes without error up, we are happy

after this strange testing, please delete the " # " of the sub1.stoll.nu in the httpd-vhost.conf
save, restart apache, testing.

if now the apache start with error, it musst be a Folder misstake in sub1.stoll.nu
if the apache start and the normal side comes up, try http://sub1.stoll.nu
please take a "index.html" inside in this sub1 folder.
e.g.
Code: Select all
<html><body>
Hello, i m the sub1 from stoll.nu
</body></html>

my httpd-vhost looks like this: (i´ll try only with one sub)

Code: Select all
NameVirtualHost *:80
#This is the first VHOST for you content stoll.nu
#change the path to your pathes of content
<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName stoll.nu
    ServerAlias www.stoll.nu
    ServerAdmin webmaster@stoll.nu
    DocumentRoot c:/program/xampp/htdocs/
<Directory "c:/program/xampp/htdocs/">
        AllowOverride All
        Options IncludesNoExec
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

#This is the first SUBdomain with his own Path for content
#<VirtualHost *:80>
#    ServerName test.stoll.nu
#    ServerAlias www.test.stoll.nu
#    ServerAdmin webmaster@stoll.nu
#    DocumentRoot c:/program/xampp/htdocs/sub1stollnu/
#<Directory "c:/program/xampp/htdocs/sub1stollnu">
#        AllowOverride All
#        Options IncludesNoExec
#        Order allow,deny
#        Allow from all
#</Directory>
#</VirtualHost>

and in the httpd it looks like this:

DocumentRoot "C:/Program/xampp/htdocs"

#
# Each directory to which Apache has access can be configured with respect
# to which services and features are allowed and/or disabled in that
# directory (and its subdirectories).
#
# First, we configure the "default" to be a very restrictive set of
# features.
#
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
deny from none
Allow from all
</Directory>

i hope i understood you correctly... but still error 403

when i change from <VirtualHost *:80> to <VirtualHost localhost> i can see the mainpage... but then the subdomain won´t work...

The errorlog:
[Fri Jun 16 23:35:06 2006] [error] [client 83.227.184.134] (20023)The given path was above the root path: Cannot map GET / HTTP/1.1 to file

you have understand me correct...

ok... at first we bring up you side.... ovverride your httpd,conf with the Backup of the httpd.conf.
Now your Side is up.

My problem is now, that i dont know what wrong.
All this "subdomain" funktion with vhost works on any maschine that i configured and by the way of many user in this forum (ok...german section)

Please bring up your Backup of the httpd.conf !!!
that closed possible variant of security holes

i will look here if i find any misstake ( i build your construction here at home)

Well, first of all revert this change in "httpd.conf":
Code: Select all
<Directory />
    Options FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride None
    Order deny,allow
    deny from all
</Directory>

And don't forgett to include the conf file:
Code: Select all
Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf

In "httpd-vhosts.conf":
Code: Select all
NameVirtualHost *:80
#This is the first VHOST for you content stoll.nu
#change the path to your pathes of content
<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName stoll.nu:80
    ServerAlias www.stoll.nu
    ServerAdmin webmaster@stoll.nu
    DocumentRoot "C:/Program/xampp/htdocs"
    <Directory "C:/Program/xampp/htdocs">
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

This is the first SUBdomain with his own Path for content
<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName test.stoll.nu:80
    ServerAlias www.test.stoll.nu
    ServerAdmin webmaster@stoll.nu
    DocumentRoot "C:/Program/xampp/htdocs/sub1stollnu"
    <Directory "C:/program/xampp/htdocs/sub1stollnu">
        AllowOverride All
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

In your hosts:
Code: Select all
127.0.0.1 localhost
x.x.x.x stoll.nu
x.x.x.x www.stoll.nu
x.x.x.x test.stoll.nu
x.x.x.x www.test.stoll.nu

"x.x.x.x" is your LAN ip.

BTW:
There is no DNS record for "www.test.stoll.nu"?

There is a dns for http://test.stoll.nu and that is pointed to my ip.

but... your solution works that i can see my mainpage... but not the subdomain. when i enter http://test.stoll.nu i come to my mainpage...

so we are a bit closer... :)

I know. Please read a second time:

BTW a small typo in my config:
Code: Select all
This is the first SUBdomain with his own Path for content

Here is a "#" missing. Change that line to:
Code: Select all
#This is the first SUBdomain with his own Path for content

Are you restarting apache everytime you make changes.

Code: Select all
#
# Virtual Hosts
#
# If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
#
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
NameVirtualHost *:80

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for all requests that do not
# match a ServerName or ServerAlias in any block.
#

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName stoll.nu
ServerAdmin admin@stoll.nu
ServerAlias www.stoll.nu
