Problems with the Linux version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Hey all,
I have downloaded XAMPP-linux-1.5.1.tar.gz to my desktop (I am running Fedora Core 4) and the install instructions say open a Linux shell and type 'su' which i did and entered my password.
then i typed:
tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.5.1.tar.gz -C /opt
and i got the following error:
tar: xampp-linux-1.5.1.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: chile returned status 2
tar: error exit delayed from previous errors
What does this mean?
How do i check if /opt exists?
Linux newbie so please explain clearly, thankyou.

What does this mean?
As the error message told you:
- Code: Select all
Cannot open: No such file or directory
--> in the directory you are, there is no file with the name "xampp-linux-1.5.1.tar.gz".

I tried to copy the xampp.tar.gz to the root of my drive but i can't paste it! So where would you recommend i copy this file to so that the above runs smoothly.
Thanks
p.s. the Linux shell prompt says root@localhost greatdane:

Nowhere...
If you are in the shell, you must "cd" into the directory where the file is (so that "tar" can find the file).

Or just copy it to /opt
and run
gunzip xampp-linux-1.5.1.tar.gz
tar -xvf xampp-linux-1.5.1.tar
To make is simple
