Apache Server not starting

Postby jenamiles » 16. October 2005 20:27

upon attempting to start xampp, I receive the following in bash:
Starting XAMPP for MacOS X 0.4...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
XAMPP: Error 1! Couldn't start Apache!
XAMPP: XAMPP-MySQL is already running.
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP: - getaddrinfo 'jenamiles' error: No address associated with nodename
- warning: unable to determine IP address of 'jenamiles'
- error: no valid servers configured
- Fatal: error processing configuration file '/Applications/xampp/etc/proftpd.conf'
XAMPP: Error 1! Couln't start ProFTPD!
XAMPP for MacOS X started.

There are no entries in the apachestart.log and the only error in the error_log is:
[Sun Oct 16 12:22:47 2005] [alert] (EAI 7)No address associated with nodename: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "jenamiles"
Configuration Failed

I have verified that the version of Apache (I have installed Apache 2) controlled through Web Sharing Services is off and my current MySQl is off.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jen

Add an entry with your hostname in "/etc/hosts".

Same Problem

Postby twinn233 » 28. December 2005 19:53

Ok I found the hosts file, but what am I to add?
My hostname, anything else?

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost

thats what the file looks like, do I just add the host name (which is "Webserver")

should it look like this?

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
Webserver

Please help, thanks.

No, you see the predefined examples in that file?

I am having the exact same problem. I still cant find /etc/hosts/. It sounds like you were able to resolve your problem...can you help me figure it out?

Thanks

The /etc is a hidden directory in the root of your hard drive. so you need to show hidden files, to do this you can download OnyX. In OnyX goto the Appearance tab and check the box next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders." Then you can find the files you need to edit. But before you can edit and save the hosts file you will need to change the permissions on the folder that it is in and the file itself. Change the permissions so that you are the owner, but don't close the Get Info window because you'll have to change the owner back to system.

Good Luck!
