Files won't extract to /opt

I downloaded xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz to install on Red Hat 9. I'm a bit of a Linux noob but followed the instructions which were very clear. After su and entering "tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz -C /opt", I got the following error message:

[root@localhost xxxxxxxx]# tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz -C /opt
tar (child): xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

The file is there and I was able to extract the files on my desktop but how do I get them into /opt?

What am I doing wrong? TIA!

try a ls -l xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz

Does this give you any output?

Thanks for your suggestion. Here's what happened.

I ran "ls -l xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz" as user, su and logged in as root and all three tries it resulted in "No such file or directory" even though I can see it and have extracted it on both my user and root desktops! Any clues? If this is an indication of a larger problem, I'd sure like to get it fixed.

Good news is that I did finally get XAMPP installed. Here's what I did. I just logged in as root. Unzipped the file and moved it to /opt. Voila! Now XAMPP is up and running. Will it cause any problems to do it that way?

Next challenge is to get some scripts installed and working.

Hi,

if "ls -l xampp-linux-1.4.13.tar.gz" tells you the file is not there, the file is NOT there.

In which directory did you save xampp?
And in which directory are you when your on the console?
The command obviosly only works if you are the the folder that xampp was saved in.

I moved the file to a directory instead of the desktop and it worked fine. All this is a learning experience . . . Thanks for your help.
