.var type-map not working?

I am currently testing some .htaccess stuff for redirecting pages based on language. I have found the documentation on using

AddHandler type-map var

and indeed when I upload this together with my .var-files to my web host it works as expected. However, when testing this with my local XAMPP 1.4.12 installation it simply dumps the contents of the .var file instead of evaluating it (same with 1.4.11 previously).

Apart from changing the DocumentRoot to my own directory I don't remember making any changes to the Apache configuration.

Any ideas on what might be going wrong here?

Sorry, hier nochmal die regionale Fassung...

Ich versuche gerade mittles .htaccess und Type-Maps eine sprachabhängige Seitenumleitung zu realisieren. Wenn ich das ganze bei meinem Hoster hochlade (dort läuft Apache 1.3.33) funktioniert das auch prima, aber mit meinem lokalen XAMPP 1.4.12 wird einfach immer nur der Inhalt der .var-Datei angezeigt, anstatt daß sie ausgewertet wird.

Hat irgendjemand vielleicht ne Ahnung, was da schief läuft? Muß ich noch irgendwelche zusätzlichen Optionen setzen?

In der "httpd.conf" siehst du unterer dem Alias für das Manual und Errorpages auch Beispiele wie sowas aussehen kann.
