Server Side Includes

I am trying out writing using SSIs and on my first try with this it failed so I guess I need to configure my XAMPP to recognise .shtml files.
How do I do this?

XAMPP is already configured to parse shtml files and resolv SSI. SO you must have done something wrong.
But you didn't explain what exactly you are doing, so i have no clue whats happening.
