mariadb server won't start - LinuxMint19.3

Postby Doug-W5DET » 20. July 2020 20:16

Fresh installation of 64-bit 7.2.32.0 after uninstalling a prior version that worked. As a result, I assume there is some artifact from the prior install but I have no idea where to look.

The installation appeared to have gone well, but when attempting to start lampp, the following occurs:
doug@DeepThought-L:~$ sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
Starting XAMPP for Linux 7.2.32-0...
XAMPP: Starting Apache...ok.
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...ok.
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...ok.

Then, one or two seconds later:
doug@DeepThought-L:~$ /opt/lampp/bin/mysql.server: 264: kill: No such process

In the meantime, the following is written to the only log I can find:
[Mon Jul 20 11:50:25.575666 2020] [core:notice] [pid 24608] AH00094: Command line: '/opt/lampp/bin/httpd -E /opt/lampp/logs/error_log -D SSL -D PHP'

Being a fresh install, probably the easiest thing to do is UNINSTALL Xampp.
Manually delete your /opt/lampp directory, and then run sudo apt autoremove.
Then try reinstalling.

Are you running on an https connection? I notice you have several references to port 443 instead of the standard port 80 used by http.
You may need to change the Listen 80 in your /opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf to Listen 443, if that is the case?

Re: mariadb server won't start - LinuxMint19.3 [Solved]

Thanks for looking at this and your suggestions. I am typing this at a different computer which has a fresh LM20 installed. And also a fresh XAMPP 7.4.8 which is working as it should. Now I will dig into the problem computer to see what I can figure out.
I really appreciate your help and I'll report back when I figure out why things went haywire. In the meantime, I have marked this problem as solved because I have a working installation even if it isn't an actual repair of the of the original problem installation.

Re: mariadb server won't start - LinuxMint19.3 [SOLVED]

As promised:
The problem I had starting "MySQL" in XAMPP was that at some point in the past I had installed mariadb via the LM software manager in addition to MySQL and completely overlooked its presence. After removing all the mariadb components in addition to everything I could find of the old XAMPP , it re-installed and runs as it should. Thanks for helping me get off my stuck point.
Incidentally, all the Port 443 calls are internal to the XAMPP installation and weren't of my doing.
In summary the real explanation is: Too soon old, too late smart.
