The mbstring extension is missing error.

I am new to XAMPP and I have tried other Apache servers before such as WAMPP and AMPPs. I i have decided that XAMPP is the best for my needs. But I cannot get the PHPMyAdmin to work on XAMPP. I have uninstalled WAMPP and AMPPS but it wont work on XAMPP. I even uninstalled and reinstalled XAMPP and I still get the following error in my browser when I go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/

The mbstring extension is missing. Please check your PHP configuration.


I have looked it it and tried many things but nothing has fixed this and I fear it is due to the fact that I installed other servers on my PC and there is a conflict and now XAMPP will not load up my PHPMyAdmin in my browser. Any help or advice will be most appreciated.
