Mysterious 301 Redirect

Mysterious 301 Redirect

Postby jpurdy647 » 06. May 2017 02:28

I downloaded and installed xamp for local web development, played around with some settings, and now localhost redirects to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness, but I can't figure out why.

My intention was to have a dns entry or similar on my laptop to associate local-dev.tmurraywellness.com to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness, so I could do my work as if I was on a sub domain of the live site. As a first step in accomplishing this goal I added an entry to the windows hosts file (C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) to direct sub.localhost to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness, and added an apache rule to direct 127.0.0.1 to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness. This all failed so I undid everything, reverted the hosts file so it again has no rules in it. I erased the rule from the apache httpd.conf file.

Localhost was still being redirected to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness so I edited the .htaccess file in localhost as it had a rewrite rule that was directing localhost to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness(not sure where that came from since I didn't put it there. Mabye the Wordpress instalation?)

Tried again and it was still redirecting, so I deleted the .htaccess file and restarted apache. Still doing it.... :!: :evil:
Then I restarted my laptop assuming the hosts file changes wouldn't go into effect until after a reboot. It was STILL doing it
Then I uninstalled apache and reinstalled fresh(keeping the htdocs folder with all my files). Rebooted again and it is even still doing it.

I've checked everything, searched online, there are no rewrite or redirect rules in my apache httpd.conf file or the ssl conf file, nothing in my hosts file, no ht access rewrite rule. Nothing that I can see is causing a redirect, but in my browser localhost is still being redirected(301 redirect) to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness, which produces 404 since my files are no longer there.

I need to run my wordpress installation off of localhost directly and not the sub directory, but this redirection issue won't go away.

What else can I do to figure out why it is redirecting?

tldr;
Getting a 301 redirect from localhost to localhost/trish/tmurraywellness even though there are no rules or entries in my .htaccess file, the windows hosts file, or the apache conf files. :shock:

Check the index.php file.
Clear your browser cache.

No luck, I cleared all cache and cookies and checked the index.php file:
Code: Select all
<?php
/**
 * Front to the WordPress application. This file doesn't do anything, but loads
 * wp-blog-header.php which does and tells WordPress to load the theme.
 *
 * @package WordPress
 */

/**
 * Tells WordPress to load the WordPress theme and output it.
 *
 * @var bool
 */
define('WP_USE_THEMES', true);

/** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require( dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/wp-blog-header.php' );

also tried localhost in Edge(Which I haven't used in months) and it redirects in the same way. There should be no shared cache :?:

Thanks for your response!!

There must be something you did not see.
Did you define any virtual hosts?
Did you change the DocumentRoot?
Are you sure the wordpress index.php is requested and not the xampp index.php?

There are many ways to debug this issue
- Acrivate the Apache RewriteLog
- Screen the complete Apache access.log, especially requests that happen around the same time the problem occurs
- simulate the request with curl
- use browser plugins to list and analyse the requests and headers

There are multiple examples if you google for debug Apache Redirect, like this one: https://blog.nexcess.net/2011/12/19/deb ... redirects/

What really confuses me is that this redirect persist even though Camp was reinstalled. All settings should have been overwritten.

I'll enable that log

Well i cannot tell you anything about it. There must be something that don't get overwritten or which you accidebtently reimported after the fresh install.

Figured out how to enable debugging (I am running apache 2.4 so I set LogLevel for rewrite to trace8)

I don't seem to get any output from apache saying it is handling a redirect, using curl -verbose in powershell says there is no redirect, using my browser tells me there IS a redirect.

These are all my configuration and relevant files.

Hosts file:
Code: Select all
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#   127.0.0.1       localhost
#   ::1             localhost

httpd.conf with LogLevel at the end:
Code: Select all
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used.  If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/xampp/apache"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:logs

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Any thoughts on how to proceed debugging this? I'm stuck as I haven't been able to succesfully log a redirect and figure out what is causing it. LogLevel is not reporting an error setting the log level with the directive in the httpd.conf file and I am using the syntax provided in the docs, although I see no indication it is actually causing a log level change.

Again I put the LogLevel directive in the httpd.conf file but I found nowhere saying that it definitely belongs in there. Could that be the wrong place?

That redirect probably happened somewhere in the WordPress PHP Scripts due to the configuration given by the installation. When installing WordPress, WordPress analyzes the environment (i.e. Domainname, installation path etc.) and stores it to the Database as well as to a config file (wp-config.php or similar) and based on this configuration it issues some redirects on runtime.

I assume (your "description" heavily lacks usefull facts), that you did NOT install WordPress onto your Xampp installation, but simply took a copy of your Online installation. If you did so, you overlooked the fact that you have to adapt several configuration files and databases in order to get it running in the new environment. This is a pure WordPress issue (not Xampp, we also cannot give WordPress support here), i know there is plenty of documentation about server change in WordPress (how to move from one server to another), you also should ask WordPress support. Xampp does not influence your problem (as you already found out - a new Xampp installation does not change anything).

What other information can I give? There is no wordpress installation in the htdocs directory, and the redirection occurs even when mysql is not running. There is no ht access file in the htdocs directory to cause a rewrite either.

The contents of my htdocs directory:
Code: Select all
    Directory: C:\xampp\htdocs

Mode                LastWriteTime         Length Name
----                -------------         ------ ----
d-----         5/5/2017   7:51 PM                dashboard
d-----         5/5/2017   7:51 PM                img
d-----         5/5/2017   7:51 PM                webalizer
d-----         5/5/2017   7:51 PM                xampp
-a----         5/4/2017   8:17 AM           3833 applications.html
-a----        2/27/2017   4:36 AM            177 bitnami.css
-a----        7/16/2015  11:32 AM          30894 favicon.ico
-a----        7/16/2015  11:32 AM            260 index.php

Index.php contents:
Code: Select all
<?php
   if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && ('on' == $_SERVER['HTTPS'])) {
      $uri = 'https://';
   } else {
      $uri = 'http://';
   }
   $uri .= $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
   header('Location: '.$uri.'/dashboard/');
   exit;
?>
Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation :-(

Is there something other than apache that can enforce a redirect?

Good joke!! Its a mess, not a description. "I played aroung" etc. - what is "i played around"? What "rules" did you apply and then remove from httpd.conf? We cannot see what you are doing and we dont know anything - what rule??? You are speaking of a WordPress installation many times (see above!), now you suddenly do not have any??

I simply tried to help, but this is definately impossible, everything depends on YOUR ability to show us, what is happening on your PC. We neither can see nor touch your PC, every information depends on you. I am going to give up, good luck to you.
