Don't want to use Database that comes with Xampp

I have Xampp already downloaded. I am trying to use mysql workbench
The newer version of Mysql workbench may not be able to run MariaDB
Can I download mysql database and run it under Xampp?
How would I do this? I guess as a separate service? Not sure

Yes. Simply do NOT start MySQL/MariaDB in the Xampp Control Panel (and also do NOT install or run it as a service, simply dont use it in any aspect), instead start the MySQL Server of your installation. Thats all, PHP and MySQL are "talking" via TCPIP Port 3306, independently from the Server versions.
