phpMyAdmin won't start

Postby samstamport » 25. November 2016 22:40

I installed XAMPP on Win 10. When I type "http://localhost:81/phpmyadmin/" into Chrome I get:

Welcome to phpMyAdmin
Error
MySQL said: Documentation
Cannot connect: invalid settings.
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.
Retry to connect

I am a newbie so I guess I missed something in the installation procedures.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

What is the file name containing the configuration settings?

What is the Windows path to that file?

a) config.inc.php

b) c:/xampp/phpMyAdmin/config.inc.php

And next time use Google, simply enter "How to config phpmyadmin" for example, or "How to set up phpmyadmin" or "How to install phpmyadmin" or or or...

Thanks!

I will try it.

I do not appreciate your surly remark about checking Google. I checked Google. I do ask dumb questions sometimes, but doesn't everyone? Your anger should be directed to the writers of the error message and the writers of the documentation. The error message assumes a LOT of prior knowledge.

Hi,

Well... if i type into google phpmyadmin + "What is the file name containing the configuration settings?" (which is the exact question you have written here) the very first hit is this one:
https://docs.phpmyadmin.net/en/latest/config.html

https://docs.phpmyadmin.net/en/latest/config.html wrote:Configuration

All configurable data is placed in config.inc.php in phpMyAdmin’s toplevel directory.

So technically it would have been possible to find the answer on google with this amount of knowledge you already have at the time writing your posting here.

Not really. I could copy and paste the whole error message into google and get really helpful hits about changing the auth method from config to cookie or changing the password in the phpmyadmin config.inc.php file.

XAMPP is shipped with a preconfigured working phpmyadmin installation.
I haven't seen any phpMyAdmin login problem with a fresh xampp installation, except:
- mysql is not started or a different mysql server is running
- database restores have been made by the user overwriting the base databases xampp delivers
- database passwords have been changed by the user
- fresh xampp is installed over another existing xampp installation
- xampp files have been replaced by the user

you don't report anything about what you have done (not even that you changed your Apache port to 81). Your report is far away from beeing qualified or sufficient for us to remotely identify your issue.
You are a newbie, thats fine. But if i am a newbie trying to get help solving a problem remotely i will give as much information as possible to enhance the chances others can see what the problem could be.
Don't blame replies of helpers as being "surly" just because you are not able to take the time posting a sufficient error report.

best wishes,
