XAMPP 7.0.9 MariaDB question

Hi,

This is my first encounter with MariaDB and one thing is freaking me out.

I have installed XAMPP 7.0.9 that comes with MariaDB on my Elementay OS Loki. However, the when I start the service from CLI and/or use GUI manager and/or use phpMyAdmin all I can see that I'm running MySQL service. In fact the only place mentioning MariaDB is "What's included?" popup link on XAMPP download page.

I understand that MariaDB is drop-in replacement for MySQL but WTF? How can one see if he's having MariaDB or MySQL installed?

Its so badly simple - either start (for example) /opt/lampp/bin/mysql (the Shell SQL Interpreter) and watch the prompt.

Or, for a more detailed information, simply start http://localhost/phpmyadmin and watch the Database Server Information (a box on the upper right side). My phpmyadmin shows this for example:

Server-Typ: MariaDB
Server-Version: 10.1.16-MariaDB - Source distribution
Protokoll-Version: 10
Benutzer: root@localhost
Server-Zeichensatz: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

Is that really so WTF difficult??

Thank you @Nobbie for your time and effort as I hope you can see why running mysql shell to see that it is not mysql shell somewhat confusing.
