XAMPP 5.6.23 on windows installing MySQL instead of MariaDB

I just downloaded the latest version of XAMPP (xampp-win32-5.6.23-0-VC11-installer.exe). According to the docs on the website, this should contain MariaDB. However, the installer installed MySQL. Is this correct?

No, just the lable is outdated. XAMPP 5.6.23 installs MariaDB.

No. But you can install a standalone MySQL and just use Apache and PHP from XAMPP.
Only sideeffect is that you will not be able to start and stop that standalone MySQL with the XAMPP control panel.

I'm having the port issue with Apache, so I will be working on this for a bit. Thanks for the response.

I removed my VmWare, which XAMPP CP said was using port 443. As far as I know my XAMPP settings are the defaults. And I am not getting any port-specific warnings.
Question is where do I look next?
