Can't find a fix for this- Pre-install error with concrete5

Postby Kaberle » 09. May 2016 03:22

This seems to be a common error when installing Concrete5 with Xampp but I can't find a fix that makes sense to me.
This is the error I get: The packages/application/config/ and the applications/files/directories must be writable by your web server.

Is this a XAMPP error or a concrete5 error?
I don't know where to find CHMOD or how to change the permissions and none of the documentation I'm reading (copius amounts until my eyes cross) is telling me HOW TO CHANGE THE CHMOD!!!

Can someone PLEASE point me in the right direction?
I am using XAMPP. 5. 6. 3 and have downloaded Concrete5 newest version as of 5/8/2016. I am using windows 7 pro on a pc.

This is a pre-installation error but all the docs ASSUME you know where to change the CHMOD and I do not. Everything else on my screen has a green checkmark except the files/directories etc area.
Running the tests is useless as all it does is tell you that you have an error (duh) and to go to the forums. I did. ALMOST ALL of the documentation there is YEARS old and when I found some with this error, again, it says change the CHMOD to 777 but WHErE IS IT?? I have been through eVer INI file I have on there.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I'm at my WITS end and I am too old for this.

Thank you!! [/color]

No, it has nothing to do with Xampp, it is a conflict between Linux and Windows. Its a Concrete5 error, as it obviously expects to run in a Linux(!) environment, whereas you try to install it on a Windows environment. WIndows has a different rights management than Linux, it seems that Concrete5 only checks for Linux rights, but this does not work on Windows systems. Maybe you can install Concrete5 anyway, i dont know how this "pre-installation-check" is working.

You might also run a Linux system and install Xampp there (there is of course a Xampp for Linux as well), in Linux you will find all folders and all commands, especially the "chmod" command, what is mentioned in the installation script.

Last not least, you may also try to grant full write access for all (windows) users and guests for these folders mentioned above, use the Windows Explorer and the Property Dialog Box to do so. You wont find any chmod tool, as there is no such thing for Windows.

Thank you for your answer Nobbie. Thousands of users have installed Concrete5 on Windows machines so how can that be the case?
I really don't want to run a virtual linux UI if I don't have to.
I went to the folders of all those directories and files and made them writable from read-only and gave myself permissions for total control in the panel that does that- what am I missing?
I even added NOTEMPTY notes in the empty folders as I read on the concrete5 forums that sometimes it doesn't see empty folders.
I am really fed up with this. I think concrete5 has work to do but it seems like an awesome CMS.
The thing is I have a client who I'm doing updates for so I am also training myself at the same time and thus am taking a class that has me installing C5 on my local server.
I have XAMPP up and running with no issues and a DB already made for C5 but I am still stuck with this pre-installation error and it won't install because of that.

Any other ideas? Thank you again !!!

Hi,

I tried to install Contrete v5.7.5.7 myself on XAMPP 5.6.19 on my Windows 10 Pro Laptop and it works like expected without any errors.
Maybe you installed some type of security software that prevents Concrete to write?

best wishes,
Altrea

Do you think if I turn off my Anti-malware bytes pro and AVG that it would help?

I don't know, but by default Windows should not prevent from writing to files and folders.
Give it a try.

a) Are you sure about that? How do you know? And did they install it on Windows7 or Windows10? Or was it on WindowsXP?

b) As i already said, i dont know what this "pre-check" means and does. Therefore i also said, that you probably simply may try and succeed to install the software.

I still dont know, why Concrete5 gives the error message that your folders are not writeable word wide. This is definately a Concrete5 issue, did you ask there?
