Locked out of PHPMyAdmin

Following the instructions in the home page of XAMPP, using the shell access I changed the password for root from blank to my choice. I now can't get into PHPMyAdmin - error
" phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL"

How do I change the configuration so that I can access it and my databases without changing the password back to a null?
