sure, i changed path for buttons from what tyler moore's vid said 'cause they weren't working with /aboutpageid= so i went to settings i think and changed path to wordpress/about. the buttons then worked fine.

i noticed that my wp folders are in c/download. when i installed wo 4.2.2 i thought i had extracted to xampp htdocs. but no sign of wp folder there. would that have created the problem?
i have posted on moore's site but he doesn't seem to reply to anyone posting. have you given up? or are u still willing to help?

If your xampp installation is pointing to for example: C:\xampp\htdocs but your WordPress installation is not there and its in C:\downloads, this would be the reason you don't see your wordpress. So yes that is your problem. Extract wordpress into the htdocs folder within xampp and try launching localhost.

My instinct here because you have changed things beyond my knowledge (I'm a joomla/moodle person myself) is to get everything fresh and copy over the changes one by one to see when you lose your visual of wordpress.
1) Stop existing xampp and just rename the folder like "xampp-original" (don't delete this)
2) Download xampp 5.6.8 straight from https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html
3) Extract xampp to C:\xampp -> run xampp and make sure it works as is
4) Download the latest version of wordpress and extract it to htdocs -> make sure it works with xampp without changes (besides setup)
5) slowly make changes to this as you did with version 1 but don't do too many changes without checking if it breaks your wordpress site and then you can reverse these changes (hopefully remembering what you changed)

I know this is not a direct solution but as I can't see any visuals, I find myself struggling to help as I don't know the buttons you talk about.

ok so i went to rename my xampp folder in C root and it says (pc) that it can't cause a folder or file is in use. does that mean i closed off wpress or xampp without exiting properly? is there a way to correct this? or should i just uninstall. doesn't anyone use xampp any more? what is moodle is it a virtual server as is xampp?

No, mostly it means that you are running explorer in that folder (close everything you dont need and do not open any folder beyond c:/xampp in an explorer), and next mostly it means, that you are currently running an executable, which is stored beyond c:/xampp (for example Apache and MySQL).

This is extremely annoying under Microsloth Windows. I used to boot the PC with an USB Linux stick and then i rename everyting i need under Linux - Windows and its poor management is "out of order" in that case. I dont like Windows anymore.

No, as i said, its fu**ing windows.

Boot the PC with a Linux DVD or CD or from USB Stick and rename the folder under LInux. Thats what i already mentioned above.

But the way I look at it, Your current site isn't working so 3 weeks worth of work isn't worth much at this moment (harsh I know but it's reality for the moment)
With a fresh site you know you have a site that works. Now you can start comparing the changes you made from the fresh (new) version to the old (not working) version. I know this sucks but it takes the most time the first time. Now that you have done this before it won't take you 3 weeks to make these changes. Hopefully you will end up with a better site than your first attempt and a sense of feeling accomplished after.

FYI: Moodle and Joomla are applications that run on top of xampp just like wordpress. Lots of people use XAMPP and variations of it like WAMPP, LAMPP, ...
