What is the significance of the red crosses on the control panel? I would presume it is not good viz. service not working correctly

As the headline tells you, this shows that you activeted the option to run the specified Module (Apache, MySQL etc.) as a Service (a WIndows Service).

Totally wrong as you see now.

Read and understand the error message and solve the problem:

10:35:12 PM [Tomcat] Make sure you have Java JDK or JRE installed and the required ports are free
10:35:12 PM [Tomcat] Check the "/xampp/tomcat/logs" folder for more information

Why would you like to install Xampp? Why would you like to run Tomcat? Do you know what Tomcat is? I have the feeling, that you rather have an idea what you are doing there and you are trying to install Xampp "just for fun". What is the goal of your Xampp Project?

My aim is to install Joomla on my lap top so that I might use it and learn. My sister and others have used XAMPP to install Joomla.

Joomla does not require Tomcat. Apache and MySQL are up and running (you see the green background), you are ready to go! Download Joomla and follow the installation manual.

I activated the option to run the specified module as a service and now every time I start my computer, the module is already running. Also, when I click STOP, a pop up appears and I have to click on it in order to stop the service. How can I switch it back to running normally?

Either unregister the Windoes services again
Or go to your Windows service manager, search for the Apache and MySQL service (or whatever compoents you registered) and set the start type to manual (instead of auto)
We don't provide any support via personal channels like PM, email, Skype, TeamViewer!

It's like porn for programmers 8)

Thanks, Altrea. I fixed it by setting it to manual with the Windows Service Manager but I still get pop ups that say Net Command when I start and stop the service.
