Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.

Postby barbara-nj » 15. April 2015 21:44

Installed XAMPP on Windows 7 laptop a couple of weeks ago and couldn't start Apache. I exited the program somewhat frustrated because, while I am skilled with end user programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, I am totally unschooled in the technical aspects of computer system level management. I returned this week to look at the pinned post "Apache won't start" I have Skype on my computer and changed the settings so that port 80 wasn't used as a backup port for Skype. Once I did that the Netstat showed port 80 for tomcat7, When I pressed the start button for appache, I got the message below. Continue below the XAMPP message.

Status change detected: stopped
4:17:44 PM [Apache] Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.
4:17:44 PM [Apache] This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies,
4:17:44 PM [Apache] improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
4:17:44 PM [Apache] Press the Logs button to view error logs and check
4:17:44 PM [Apache] the Windows Event Viewer for more clues
4:17:44 PM [Apache] If you need more help, copy and post this
4:17:44 PM [Apache] entire log window on the forums

While my userid is also the system administrator id, I did not run the program as aministrator I exited from the program and ran it as aministrator. After pressing that Start button for apache I got the same message. So now we're down to blocked port, missing dependences, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.

I checked the error log for Apache, but there was nothing in the file. I checked the event viewer, but the only error listed for today was at approx. 8:30 am this morning involving Adobe Acrobat. It is after 4pm right now, I wasn't working with XAMPP this morning, so I take it this error event is not what I'm looking for.
There was no crash or shutdown. That leaves us with blocked port or missing dependencies, neither of which am I capable of assessing without help.

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanaks,
Barbara

Well, no you know just how ignorant I am about system things. I assumed because Tomcat showed up on the XAMPP screen it was part of the download. It turned out to be a program meant to be run on my website for which I had a local sample to test its usefulness to me. I deleted it, and every thing is ok. Apache is running.

Thanks!

You are welcome :D
XAMPP ships a Tomcat server too, but not with default port 80.
