XAMPP configuration problems

Hi, I have used XAMPP under Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04, incuding setting up virtual hosts, for some time and without any real problems. I have now trying to use XAMAPP under Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1 but am having real difficulties. I have downloaded and installed XAMPP for OS X v5.6.3 and this standard installation works - up to a point!

http://localhost/xampp/ works fine, and I have created a site called shawcottage at /Applications/XAMPP/xampfiles/htdocs/shawcottage.

http://localhoat/shawcottage/index.php works but none of my include files are picked up because, in php require_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] returns the path /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs instead of /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage.

I tried changing the DocumentRoot in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/etc/httpd.conf to:
DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage" (i.e adding /shawcottage) but this didn't make any difference.

I have tried all sorts of fixes and have reinstalled XAMPP several times but am stuck. Can anyone offer any help please?

That sounds right. Your server document root is htdocs. Did you stop/start your apache server after making changes? If so, you may not have changed the right conf file. Why not just concatenate /shawcottage to the server document root?

Thanks for the quick resonse. Yes, i restarted apache. When you say I may not have changed the right config file, which other one could I have changed other than Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/etc/httpd.conf? I can't just concatenate /shawcottage to the server document root because the code works perfectly on my production server and also on my XAMPP server under windows - a configuration I have used many times successfully, so something is definitely not right with my XAMPP OS X setup.

This bit of code:

is pretty standard but, as I said above, it's not actually picking up the full document root.

Show your changed conf file. Do your server settings differ from your Windows version?

As for that bit of code, I was saying that if you wanted to concat, you could use

Thanks again. I can't change the code as you suggest because I would have to change it back again to actually work in production - and the code is used on every page that accesses the database!
The only change I made to httpd.conf was to add shawcottage to the 2 lines below :

DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage"
<Directory "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage">

Otherwise the httpd.conf is unchanged from the XAMPP installation. I also tried just changing the first of those lines but neither seems to make any difference (after restarting apache). I used the XAMPP control panel to edit httpd.conf using the Configure option as I wanted to make sure I was editing the correct copy. However, the fact these changes didn't make any difference is a bit odd!

Are you using a virtual host entry and is that from localhost?

No, I'm not using virtual hosts (althought that's where I want to get to). I am using the vanilla config that comes with XAMPP other than the minor changes above (that don't seem to do anything).

If you changed DocumentRoot to "/Applications/XAMPP/xampfiles/htdocs/shawcottage", it is definately impossible to run your application via http://localhost/shawcottage/index.php (as you said in the first posting), because localhost already yields to the subfolder shawcottage. Therefore, if you enter http://localhost/shawcottage/index.php in your browser, Apache will look for /Applications/XAMPP/xampfiles/htdocs/shawcottage/shawcottage/index.php (twice "shawcottage") what does not exist.

There is something wrong with your description.

Thanks Nobbie. I have just done (yet another) clean install of XAMPP (versions as above). Without making any changes to any of the installed config files I get this:

http://localhost takes me to the XAMPP for Mac OS X home page as you would expect - good, everything works!

I then create a folder for my site called shawcottage as: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage and put into this a test file called test.php.

http://localhost/shawcottage/test.php works perfectly - it takes me to test file test.php and this outputs exactly what I would expect. Good - php works and appache is correctly linking to my site files.

I then amend test.php so that is simply contains:

echo "Document_route = " . $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
?>

When I run this (http://localhost/shawcottage/test.php) the output is: Document_route=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htodcs
Notice that the document root is not showing shawcottage on the end. Again, this is pretty much as expected. With XAMPP under Windows or Ubuntu I would now change the http.conf file to point to the shawcottage folder. Let's forget about setting up more sophisticated virtual hosts at this point - I tried that under OS X and that didn't work either, so keeping thing simple...)

I now edit the httpd config file: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/etc/httpd.conf and change the line
DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs"
to: DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/shawcottage"
and restart apache. Under Windows and Ubuntu that's all I need to do (different directory paths of course) for everything to work correctly.
With OS X when I browse http://localhost it works and takes me to the XAMPP for Mac OS X home page as you would expect - good, everything still works!
When I run my test file http://localhost/shawcottage/test.php) the output is: Document_route=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htodcs so nothing has changed. At this point I checked the XAMPP control panel (from where I restarted apache) and I can see that apache is running but in the Application log is an error message:

Line 229, of course, is where I changed the DocumentRoot setting. So, it's no wonder nothing changed, just surprising that apache restarted at all!

So, my immediate problem is that I cannot change the DocumentRoot setting in httpd.conf. What am I doing wrong?

OK, now I have no idea what's going on. Without making any further changes I restarted my Mac and now apache won't start - same error as above.

So, I changed the httpd.conf file back to it's original settings so that the document root is set back to its default: DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs" and, guess what - apache still won't start and I get the same error message about DocumentRoot must be a directory - and it's set back to its original value. AAAAGGGGHHHH!
Can anyone help me out before I kick the Mac down the stairs and revert to Ubuntu? Or, I hear MAMP is OK?

I use NetBeans but I also use the Configure option in XAMPP control panel or TextEdit. For all the recent tests I have NOT used NetBeans, just in case, but used XAMPP control panel.
