Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

I have a one year old installation of Xampp 1.7.7 running PHP version 5.3.8. I also have mediawiki installed on top of it.
I need to update PHP to newer version, I downloaded and tried to swap the PHP folder under XAMPP folder with newer version of PHP but that did not work out.
Can somebody please suggest me on how can i get update PHP with in XAMPP or if i need to update all of XAMPP. In this case will i have to reinstall media wiki again?
Help please.
Thanks

I updated my XAMPP a few weeks a go and got in a slight pickle. In the end I saved my projects folders to a safe place and created a fresh installation of XAMPP (this will need a unique folder name if you wait to delete your old folder afterwards), from a new download. Then I copied my projects folders into the htdocs folder. You might have a preference for a different location in your structure.
