Localhost works, but the IP 404's

Postby Deco » 24. May 2014 20:29

Hello,

I've recently started working with XAMPP.

I used xampp-win32-1.8.3-4-VC11.zip
My computer runs Windows 8.1.
I installed it to E:/Programming/xampp
I've not changed anything in the config files.

I use XAMPP in conjunction with No-IP to provide a static IP.
No-IP seems to work perfectly.
Apache seems to run perfectly.
When I go to http://localhost/, the file at E:/Programming/xampp/htdocs/index.html is loaded. It all works perfectly.

The problem occurs whenever I access my website from outside my network; there is only a white screen.
Both my friend and my phone only bring up white screens when I go to my website.
portchecktool.com confirms that port 80 is open.
checksite.us tells me that the site is running, but it 404's.

What could be causing this?

Thank you. I hope that's all the information you need. I appreciate the help.

Your hope is in vain.

How is your Xampp computer connected to the internet?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean.
I have an ethernet connection to a Belkin router. I don't explicitly know how XAMPP connects to the internet.

But you got it right:

Thats exactly what I wanted to know.

Via your router of course.

Back to your previous post:

I use XAMPP in conjunction with No-IP to provide a static IP.

This must be a misunderstanding. No-IP does not provide static IPs, it provides domain names for dynamic IPs (like providers usually assign) and you can configure No-IP to assign your dynamic IP to that domain name (i.e. like username.np-ip.biz or similar). As your provider usually changes your IP every 24 hours (and/or disconnects your browser) you have to re-configure NO-IP every time when your IP changes. There are many routers out there, which have the ability to do this automatically, but you have to configure your router in an appropriate way. Is it this what you mean by "provide a static IP"??

Anyway - this domain name (and/or your local IP) is NOT(!!!) the IP of your Xampp PC (and this the problem your are running into) - it is of course the public IP of your router! Therefore you only reach your router from outside (via smartphone or any PC somewhere else) and not your Xampp PC. You have to configure your router in order to forward all incoming requests on Port 80 to the Xampp PC in your LAN. Your router will have a page which shows you all connected PCs. The router should have an option like "portforwarding" or similar, where you can forward any Port to any PC inside your LAN, and there you have to forward Port 80 to the Xampp PC (to the IP of the Xampp PC).

Yes, that is what I meant by provides a static IP. No-IP has a program called Dynamic Update Client which checks for a change in my IP address. I run that whenever I need No-IP.

I believe I have port-forwarded correctly. portchecktool.com tells me that it works.

This might help to know:
I used apache by itself before I found out about xampp.
It worked. There were no problems.
I uninstalled apache and installed xampp, which is when the problem began.

Thanks. I appreciate it.
