Apache would not start

Hi All - I am new in the PHP and Apache environment. I installed using XAMPP and Apache would not start:

7:45:26 PM [Apache] Attempting to start Apache app...

7:45:27 PM [Apache] Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.

7:45:27 PM [Apache] improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
7:45:27 PM [Apache] Press the Logs button to view error logs and check
7:45:27 PM [Apache] the Windows Event Viewer for more clues
7:45:27 PM [Apache] If you need more help, copy and post this
7:45:27 PM [Apache] entire log window on the forums

I tried to change the port to 8080 without success.

Please help.

I have exactly the the same issue and am also new to this so i also would like to know the answer and also it would be good to compare notes at some point as we are both new

Ive just solved it!!!!!!!!!
if you look at the bottom of your screen on the toolbar if a black window with a c:/ prompt is opn right click and close it and then click start in the xampp window.
