Hi strayduck,

I don't think that it changes quickly. MySQL is still (and by far) the dominant DBMS for crossplatform database driven webdevelopment.
Some companies have changed or want to change to MariaDB. But you can say the same for PHP vs. C#.NET or Ruby on Rails. Should we now switch PHP too?

We have had a discussion in the Windows forum half a year ago. You can find it here:

For Windows i have written a tut on how to switch MySQL to MariaDB the XAMPP way:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=57054&p=211509#p211509At the end database management systems are loosely coupled so you can install a DBMS at anytime you want to. if the programming language is providing database drivers for it you can easily connect to it even if it is not fully integrated to XAMPP. easily use it. Integration into the XAMPP world with all functionality XAMPP provides can be DIFFICULT (on non Windows systems even more difficult).
strayduck wrote:Also: Do any Apache Friends have a view on whether this should be included in a future release of XAMPP?
I personally think that the reasons mentioned on the windows discussions are still up to date so i don't think and want MySQL to be fully replaced by MariaDB in the near future in XAMPP.
You can use whatever you want, but XAMPP should contain (by default) the single components used on most webserver services which is still Apache, MySQL and PHP and not NGinx, MariaDB and Ruby on Rails.
What i think could be possible in the future are AddOn packages for XAMPP adding or replacing some components.
best wishes,
