Cannot Install xampp-osx-1.8.2-2-installer.app

When I run the app it shows the first step of the installation process but goes no further.

After about 3 minutes it is using 99% of my cpu.

I cannot force quit the installer. I have to reboot.

OS X Version 10.9
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB DDR3 Memory

Why do the newer versions need an "installer"? Older versions were simply a folder that I could copy into my applications folder.

Hi,

The installer allows to perform some validations and checks to avoid possible issues with the system. Could you post more info about the error? Can you see the welcome screen? It is very weird, we did not see that in our tests. Would be possible to try in a different OS X?

Hi Beltran

I mount the .dmg, then I double click the installer.
OSX asks for my password: "XAMPP wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."
8 seconds later I see a Bitnami logo.

... well, what do you know... I had to go outside for 20 minutes and when I came back I saw the setup screen and I could actually interact with it this time. Usually I would get the spinning beachball of death for 15 minutes straight and be unable to kill the installer app process, so I would hard reboot.

Can you tell me what is the difference between XAMPP Core Files and XAMPP Developer Files? I don't get any descriptions for them in the installer. Should I install both?

I installed both and when the installer was finished I let it "launch xampp".

It opened Safari, which is not my default browser.

Safari went to http://aluminium.local/xampp/ and I saw 2 error messages:

Warning: file_get_contents(lang.tmp) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/index.php on line 2
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/index.php:2) in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/index.php on line 4

I changed the permissions on /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.tmp to allow Everyone: read and now refreshing http://aluminium.local/xampp/ and http://localhost/ both go to /xampp/splash.php.

From splash.php I clicked English and was taken to http://localhost/xampp/lang.php?en.
On this page page I get 4 errors
Warning: fopen(lang.tmp) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 7
Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 8
Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 9
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php:7) in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 10

I changed permissions on lang.tmp to allow everyone to do everything. Refreshed and now the page loads properly.

From http://localhost/xampp/index.php I clicked on phpMyAdmin in the menu on the left.
I get the following message:
Error
MySQL said: Documentation

#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured).

I guess the "launch xampp" at the end of the installer didn't actually activate mysql.

I opened the manager-osx.app and tried to start MySQL Database. It said "starting..." for a few seconds and then went back to saying "stopped".
The apache web server says it is currently "stopped" but that's incorrect because I can access localhost and run php files.
I'm going to reboot and try again.

Rebooted.

Opened manager-osx.app

Started apache.

http://localhost/ now works.

Clicked phpMyAdmin, got the same messages (of course) but the visual style of the page is VERY different from what it was before. Odd.

Started Mysql Database. PhpMyAdmin works.

I think what might have happened was I didn't shut down apache and mysql from my previous xampp installation and that's why phpmyadmin looked so different. Is that possible?
