Starting Apache 1.8.3.

Installed XAMPP 1.8.3 on Windows 7; Apache won't start -

Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.

However, PID 3932 is httpp.exe *32 Apache HTTP Server ??? It is listening to ports 80 and 443, isn't that what it is supposed to be directed at? (Am I confused or what!) Please help a beginner's beginner, thank you.

Re: Starting Apache 1.8.3.

Sorry, mistyped httpd.exe.

This morning I started control panel and apache and mysql are now running. I didn't do anything other than shut off/on my laptop.

However, now http://localhost/ just results in a browser message that it can't find "localhost".

Apache PIDs are 6752, 1508 and ports are 443, 8080.
Mysql PID is 3216, and port is 3306.

Any advice here will be appreciated.

So, after stopping/starting control panel a couple of times, I now get the following:

XAMPP Apache is already running on port 443
7:57:53 AM [mysql] XAMPP MySQL is already running on port 3306
7:57:53 AM [Tomcat] Problem detected!
7:57:53 AM [Tomcat] Port 8080 in use by "c:\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exe"!
7:57:53 AM [Tomcat] Tomcat WILL NOT start without the configured ports free!
7:57:53 AM [Tomcat] You need to uninstall/disable/reconfigure the blocking application
7:57:53 AM [Tomcat] or reconfigure Tomcat and the Control Panel to listen on a different port

How am I making this so complicated. I thought xampp was a system to essentially emulate a webserve "within" my laptop so that I could build and test my website/webpages (Joomla). It seems to be so complex for my small brain.

Do others out there have this much trouble just getting it to run?

Do others out there just tyring to get it running have this much difficulty?

xampp installation - really?

Postby maxallan » 03. September 2013 01:35

I am admittedly a beginner's beginner, however I have been spending many well intentioned hours (actually days) trying to install xampp so I can run Joomla on local host and develop a medium level website.

I got things installed and seeminly working several months ago with xampp 1.7.4 and Joomla 1.5 but can not get anything working again.

I have tried to install the original all over again -that didn't work. I have tried installing xampp 1.7.4, 1.8.2, and now 1.8.3, and all I get is errors. Port errors, can't run Apache, now port errors, can't start Tomcat, etc., etc., etc.

I never pretended to be a development person, however, XAMPP (Apache Friends) and Joomla are not promoted as requiring super development person expertise. Quite the contrary, they are promoted as a simple way to set up a local web server and a way to develop websites without being an HTML genius.

I am most concerned with XAMPP as I have been reading posts and going to website after website and keep coming up with evidence of problems, problems, problems.

I am trying to do basics.

I am tired of saying "I".

Can somebody provide some success stories about how they installed XAMPP on a Windows 7 computer, sucessfullly?

We need the full contents of the XAMPP control panel message window.
You said anything about ports 443 and 8080, but you are trying to start Tomcat.
So is Apache HTTPD using port 8080 or Apache Tomcat?
We don't provide any support via personal channels like PM, email, Skype, TeamViewer!

It's like porn for programmers 8)

I have moved to yet another PC ( a desktop) to see what difference I get.

My system:
HP Compaq elite 8300 CMT
i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz, 8 GB Ram, 64-bit
Windows 7 Professional

Trying to install: xampp-win32-1.8.3-1-VC11-installer

Prior to starting install there were no processes using ports 80 or 443 when I checked using start > cmd > netstat -o -n -a

After installation and upon startup of XAMPP Control Panel v3.2.1, it shows the following:

10:51:17 AM [main] Initializing Control Panel
10:51:17 AM [main] Windows Version: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
10:51:17 AM [main] XAMPP Version: 1.8.3
10:51:17 AM [main] Control Panel Version: 3.2.1 [ Compiled: May 7th 2013 ]
10:51:17 AM [main] You are not running with administrator rights! This will work for
10:51:17 AM [main] most application stuff but whenever you do something with services
10:51:17 AM [main] there will be a security dialogue or things will break! So think
10:51:17 AM [main] about running this application with administrator rights!
10:51:17 AM [main] XAMPP Installation Directory: "c:\xampp\"
10:51:17 AM [main] Checking for prerequisites
10:51:17 AM [main] All prerequisites found
10:51:17 AM [main] Initializing Modules
10:51:17 AM [Apache] Problem detected!
10:51:17 AM [Apache] Port 80 in use by "Unable to open process" with PID 1984!
10:51:17 AM [Apache] Apache WILL NOT start without the configured ports free!
10:51:17 AM [Apache] You need to uninstall/disable/reconfigure the blocking application
10:51:17 AM [Apache] or reconfigure Apache and the Control Panel to listen on a different port
10:51:17 AM [Apache] Problem detected!
10:51:17 AM [Apache] Port 443 in use by "Unable to open process" with PID 1984!
10:51:17 AM [main] Starting Check-Timer
10:51:17 AM [main] Control Panel Ready

When I check to see what process PID 1984 is, it is listed as the following;

httpd.exe *32 1984 Apache HTTP Server

Which seems to me to be saying the Apache server is using 80 and 443 and that is what the Control Panel is saying is keeping Apache server from starting???????
