PHP Not Working {Solved}

Postby Zorro » 14. August 2013 19:54

I am reading the PHP/MySQL Programming book by Andy Harris but am stuck on the first chapter. After downloading XAMPP I made an example program to test out PHP. However, to my dismay, PHP is not showing.
Code: Select all
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html lang="EN" dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Hello in PHP</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Hello in PHP</h1>

<?php
 print "Hello, world!";
  phpInfo();
?>

</body>
</html>

(only the HTML heading is shown, not "Hello, World!")

A webpage using PHP to show an external file does not work, either.
Code: Select all
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html lang="EN" dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Tip of the day</title>
</head>

<body>

<h1>Tip of the day</h1>
<?php

print "<h3>Here's your tip:</h3>";
?>

<div style = "border-color:green; border-style:groove; border-width:2px">
<?php
readfile("tips.txt");
?>
</div>

</body>
</html>

The book provides no assistance with this issue, and I can find no errors listed in XAMPP. I would appreciate any help. I am using XAMPP 1.8.1. with Control Panel 3.1.0 on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Did you save your file with the .php file extension?

I did, but the problem is that I could not open it and run it on the browser (I use Firefox, but it would not work on IE either). Attaching a .html extension (both alone and following the .php extension) would work in the browser, but PHP would not function.

How do you "open" the file in your browser?

In my XAMPP folder, I go to the htdocs folder and select the file I want to open with the option "Open with." I then select Firefox.exe and it opens the .php file in my browser. I am able to open .php files like .html files because of this; however, the code still does not work. Here is a picture of the "Tip of the day" error:

yeah...

That is one of the many dozen "I don't know how php parsing works / how to request a local php file" issues because of a lack of knowledge about web technology.
Just because you have "installed" XAMPP doesn't mean your browser got to know what to do with .php files.
You have to act as your files where saved somewhere on a webserver in the internet, means you have to request your .php files. Simply double-clicking, drag and drop to the browser doesn't work. PHP is not HTML.

So if your file path is \xampp\htdocs\file.php the url would be http://localhost/file.php.
If it is \xampp\htdocs\subfolder1\subfolder2\file.php the URL is http://localhost/subfolder1/subfolder2/file.php

best wishes,
Altrea

Thank you, I feel stupid for not noticing that before. However, that seems to be (at least partially) the problem. I am not sure if I do have a local server on my computer (I thought that the Localhost, which works just fine, acted as a server), as when I do as you suggest, I receive the following message:
Image
If this is the case, how can I set up a local server for my computer, or, barring that, find a free server to use? I know I sound like a newb (that is exactly what I am when it comes to XAMPP) but I have high hopes of getting rolling after being established.

That's not the URLs he gave you. Re-read the post and try it again.

More specifically: xampp/htdocs/ = localhost/

I have tried that format and received the same result. It is not helping. :(

Using localhost/index.php (index.php is a .php file in htdocs) takes me to the main XAMPP menu.

Thats the reason you downloaded XAMPP. XAMPP is a bundle of very well known Webserver components.

And if your file is \xampp\htdocs\hello.php the URL is http://localhost/hello.php

I have tried that, but to no avail:
Image
Here is the "proof" that the file is in htdocs:
Image
Initially I thought that the encoding might be the reason, but it does not work in either default encoding or UTF-8.

Interestingly, other files (such as html files) receive the same response. It seems more likely that there is a bug with the server (or that I am doing something wrong). I am running both Apache and MySQL. There are no error files for Apache (such so that Notepad asks if I would like to create a new file) but I do have the following error log for MySQL (I had some initial trouble with installing it, then it started working):

It has now been a few days since I have received any help, and I am now getting worried. The problem persists and I still do not know what is wrong. I am unable to use programs that I write because of this.

Maybe you should post your httpd.conf contents? What are the contents of your control panel when you start Apache?

My recommandation would be to install XAMPP at the recommend installation path C:\xampp and not inside your users directory.

I have done so, and I have uninstalled/deleted the previous XAMPP folder. However, because it is essentially a complete reset of XAMPP, I was surprised that Localhost asked for my username and password (which I recognized as the same as before, since they were auto-filled), and that the same error continues to afflict me. Because the server is unchanged, I believe that it is either external (and having a misleading name) or it is located in a different file.

My httpd.conf:
Code: Select all
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/xampp/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 0.0.0.0:80
#Listen [::]:80
Listen 80

# Default charset UTF8

    # Redirect: Allows you to tell clients about documents that used to

    # Example:
    # Redirect permanent /foo http://localhost/bar

    #
    # Alias: Maps web paths into filesystem paths and is used to
    # access content that does not live under the DocumentRoot.
    # Example:
    # Alias /webpath /full/filesystem/path
    #
    # If you include a trailing / on /webpath then the server will
    # require it to be present in the URL.  You will also likely
    # need to provide a <Directory> section to allow access to
    # the filesystem path.

    #
    # ScriptAlias: This controls which directories contain server scripts.
    # ScriptAliases are essentially the same as Aliases, except that
