running XAMPP from localhost

I am facing problem in running XAMPP from localhost.
I have downloaded & installed XAMPP ((XAMPP Linux 1.8.2) in my system.
Now when i am trying to run the command : /opt/lampp/lampp start
[root@localhost local]# /opt/lampp/lampp start
/opt/lampp/lampp: line 435: test: =: unary operator expected
Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.8.2-0...
XAMPP: Starting Apache...ok.
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...ok.
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...ok.


[root@localhost extra]# /opt/lampp/lampp status
/opt/lampp/lampp: line 435: test: =: unary operator expected
Version: XAMPP for Linux 1.8.2-0
Apache is running.
MySQL is not running.
ProFTPD is deactivated.

If I try to go to webbrowser : http://localhost:8080/xampp/splash.php
none of the tab is working in my XAMPP homepage. The homepage contains only 'language' tab below 'XAMPP'. Why i am not getting exprected XAMPP homepage.

Please help.

Which linux are you running? Maybe your default "Shell" differs from bash (what is assumed for Xampp - i think so).

Why do you provide Port 8080? Usually Xampp runs on default Port 80 (which you need not to provide)? Did you change the configuration?

i am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)
Yes i have changed the configuration file :/opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf , to get rid of the error "Another web server is already running"
changed: ‘listen 80′ —-> 8080
so to run two local servers simultaneously we changed the port.

I suspect there is some port error.But not able to figure out what it is
