change permalink in WP causes error 500

Hello there,
perhaps someone can help me out.

I'm running wordpress on XAMPP, I want to develop a new site on localhost before I publish to the web. When I change the permalink settings to anything except default the site and dashboard both crash, I get Server Error 500.

I've searched the forums and found that if I delete the .htaccess file the site comes back and error goes away.

Is there a way that I can solve this problem properly and use 'pretty permalinks'? I've seen that I might need to edit httpd.conf but I'm not sure what this is or how to do it.

I am quite new to using XAMPP please don't assume I am an expert or anything!

b) schaue in den error.log, da steht eine außführlichere Meldung als nur Error 500, so findet man die Ursache schneller.

Hi Michael,

Don't install any webapplications inside \xampp\htdocs\xampp\
This folder is restricted in a special way and some applications don't run there without some extra configuration.

Instead create an own subfolder inside \xampp\htdocs\ and install your application in that subfolder.
Very common you want to have a new subfolder for every unique application.

so it seems that I have been putting all my websites in the wrong directory all this time! I'll move the WP installation hopefully that will fix the problem.
