v1.8.1 Apache - Port 443 in use by "system"!

Postby buildup » 14. May 2013 16:26

Hi and thanks for great product.
Upgraded from a v1.7(4?). Well uninstall/installed. Problem is Apache now won't start due to ' Port 443 in use by "system"! ' msg. Using Win7, no other servers running. Nothing changed - and now this msg.
What makes this more curious I did install Bitnami WAMP and WAPP which uses Apache 2.4.4 to use their coordinated product installs. No errors from them.
I do like XAMPP VERY much. 2 key addtional features you have is Mercury Mail and Filezilla which had me keep XAMPP and was planning to use XAMPP Apache for products not included in Bitnami (such as osCommerce).
So after patting you on the back, could you give me some ideas to probe when suddenly XAMPP can't listen in on SSL port 443

Thnx,
Rory

Hi, it seems that the Port is already in use so another Apache process is running. Could you check that the BitNami Apache servers are not running? Could you post the output of the "netstat -a" command?

Hi,

No, Apache will never be identifyed by "SYSTEM", even it will get started as Windows service.
In most cases it is the Microsoft Internet Information Service or any component of it.

It is not a BitNami Apache Server. Bitnami doesn't have anything to do with this release.

best wishes,

To clarify - I mention Bitnami since it uses a pre-configured Apache in a manner like ApacheFriends does. Both are v2.4 so an initial thought is a change from 2.2 use in XAMPP v1.7.7. But since both are the same version on my PC that is not it. I am running Win7 64b fully updated with MS updates. So any ideas what to do. Or is using a different port even advisable? Thanks, Rory

Wow - i am feeling accomplished! :D It turns out the problems was just like Skype hijacking port 80. I made Apache a service automatically starting at system startup. That took ownership of 443 before Skype could when I logged on as a user. So it seems Skype likes 80 and 443 to own exclusively, but looks elsewhere if they are already owned by another application. Anyway, I am all fixed now! Thanks for all the help. i hope this helps someone else in a similar bind (no pun intended).

you could also configure Skype not to use the ports 80 and 443.
Its just a checkfield in your Skype configuration.
