you need...

Postby MAGnUm » 27. February 2004 02:19

are you using dsl/ cable? if so a dynamic dns service is needed (http://www.servehttp.com). if you have a static ip with your ISP then you dont need dynamic dns (http://www.godaddy.com). you can do some research on google for domain registration. good luck.
ya i would like to have this
Do you have a domain name? if you need a free one you can go to http://signup.megafps.com

Do you want to host more than one site on your box? That is a different story. I can help you if you still need help.

virtual domains

Postby nigelw » 29. February 2004 10:52

Karl if you are looking to setup virtual hosts or virtual domains use this http.conf file and do some minor changes to it.
I have put **** on the lines you need to edit. Search for **** and beside it are instructions. This conf file is for the default local on xampp you may have to change the path of your xampp dir if it is not c:\xampp.
I hope this works or points you in the right direction

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/> for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation
# (available at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#lockfile>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "C:/xampp/apache"

#
# ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
# If unspecified (the default), the scoreboard will be stored in an
# anonymous shared memory segment, and will be unavailable to third-party
# applications.
# If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
# scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
#
#ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
#
PidFile logs/httpd.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15

## Server-Pool Size Regulation (MPM specific)
##

# WinNT MPM
# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves

# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char

relevant?

Postby nigelw » 02. March 2004 22:56

The entire thing is relevant, he can replace this with his current httpd.conf file and just edit the part with the **** It was for karl's benefit, he called himself a newbie, so instead of confusing him with trying to insert snippets into a config file he is not familiar with I gave him the whole thing. If I receive a compaint from the moderator I will change my ways but until then I will give people as much detail as I possibly can.

default gateway

Postby nigelw » 03. March 2004 06:53

if you are using win xp or 2000 press the start button, press run, and then type cmd and press enter.

then the command window will open. type ipconfig you will get something like this:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix useless crap here
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The Default Gateway on my system is 192.168.1.1 that is the internal ip of my router.

If it is a linksys or dlink login with the username admin and password admin. Be sure to change the password from the default password!

To check your external ip go to http://whoami.remote.net

Hope this helps.

I have a long write-up that I can post about setting up the router if you like. But magnum might get mad :P
