xampp help (Getting Domain to show not IP)

Postby IT_Guy » 17. April 2013 16:47

Hello everyone. Before we get started thank you for taking the time to read this and good luck to anyone who tries to help.

Here is my issue. I have a free Host set up with no ip. all it does is takes the URL and redirect it to my IP where xampp has the website I have coded. Once you get to my website, the no ip URL is dropped an replaced with http://MYIP/ZeroCraft/index.html

Which it works so im not complaining. But I really don't want my IP in the URL, not to mention it's not professional. There will come a time where my funds allow me to actually purchase a domain name. But for now is there a way I can have it display my free Host name? If so can you please walk me through it? If it helps I am fluent with HTML5, CSS3, and now some PHP.

-Thanks

Hi IT_Guy,

Depends on if your dynamic DNS service provider. You should ask no-ip that question.
btw: This is not an XAMPP issue.

best wishes,

How is this not an xampp issue? NO-IP does it job the free host name they gave me allows people to go to my websites. But once on the website the NO-IP host name is not kept. Instead it is replaced with http://myip/path of where the file for the website is.

Becuse NO-IP simply redirects URLs to IPs. This happens before your computer has any change to react on the request.
It's a no-ip configuration issue http://www.noip.com/getting_started.php#4

So then there is no way for xampp to take incoming connections to files and display a domain name not the file path?

If XAMPP Apache doesn't have any information about the url because it is a redirect: no.
Your browser shows the url you requested (or gets requested by an redirect). Thats transparency.
If that is not the behaviour you wanted, you need to configure it at the place it happens, which is no-ip.

Ok thank you for your help. You guys should push to have articles taken offline. Many articles on goodle say that xampp host files can be edited to display a domain and not your IP.
Obviously your answers are the right ones but still it can get confusing. Thank you for your help. I would like to also let you know that I found a colum that was minimized. When I expanded it there was a choice to "Cloak Domain" it now displays the hostname and not my IP. This was an option in NO-IP not xampp.

Thank you for your time my issue has been solved. This topic can now be left for dead.

Examples?
You can, on your very own system or with the help of a DNS in your very own network, simulate domain names. But thats not what you want.
This will not work for external requests because that domain names are just simulated and translated on the very own system.
And: Apache gets full information about the requested url (unlike the redirect of no-ip)
