Port wars between VMware and Xampp..

Postby FORSAK3N » 31. March 2013 18:54

Hi, Can someone please help me. I recently started learning PHP and MySQL. First I downloaded the XAMPP from the site and installed using the installer. There was port problem and Apache did not run. I searched for the solution and found out that Skype is using the Ports 80 and some 443 or 433. So, I uninstalled the Skype and this time downloaded .zip file of XAMPP from the site and put it in the D:\xampp folder. After this I immediately clicked on the xampp-control.exe and it launched the control panel. In the control panel all the services "Apache, MySQL, FileZilla and Tomcat" have a cross mark in-front of them. In the display beneath there is this message

"3:20:29 AM [main] Initializing Control Panel
3:20:29 AM [main] Windows Version: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
3:20:29 AM [main] XAMPP Version: 1.8.1
3:20:29 AM [main] Control Panel Version: 3.1.0 Beta 6 [ Compiled: September 20th 2012 ]
3:20:29 AM [main] Running with Administrator rights - good!
3:20:29 AM [main] XAMPP Installation Directory: "d:\xampp\"
3:20:29 AM [main] Checking for prerequisites
3:20:29 AM [main] All prerequisites found
3:20:29 AM [main] Initializing Modules
3:20:29 AM [Apache] Problem detected!
3:20:29 AM [Apache] Port 443 in use by "vmware-hostd.exe"!
3:20:29 AM [Apache] Apache WILL NOT start without the configured ports free!
3:20:29 AM [Apache] You need to uninstall/disable/reconfigure the blocking application
3:20:29 AM [Apache] or reconfigure Apache to listen on a different port
3:20:29 AM [main] Starting Check-Timer
3:20:29 AM [main] Control Panel Ready"

When i try to run Apache, shows some error is displayed which I have no clue of. The following is the error.

Attempting to start Apache app...
3:47:36 AM [mysql] Attempting to start MySQL app...
3:47:36 AM [mysql] Status change detected: running
3:47:42 AM [Apache] Attempting to start Apache app...
3:47:42 AM [Apache] Status change detected: running
3:47:43 AM [Apache] Status change detected: stopped
3:47:43 AM [Apache] Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.
3:47:43 AM [Apache] This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies,
3:47:43 AM [Apache] improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
3:47:43 AM [Apache] Check the "/xampp/apache/logs/error.log" file
3:47:43 AM [Apache] and the Windows Event Viewer for more clues

Can any one please help me solve this problem. I'm a student and I'm trying to learn and do my project.

Note: I have VMware running on my PC. I need it for my other subject work. Please help me ASAP.

Thanks a ton in Advance..

Hi FORSAK3N,

FORSAK3N wrote:So, I uninstalled the Skype

Why didn't you simply configure Skype not to use the ports 80 and 443?

You can configure the VMware Server too

Please don't write sentences like this. This is a volunteer board, so all helpers here spend their free time to solve other people problems. We help as soon as we want to. If this is not fast enough for you feel free to ask for help at one of the it freelancer boards (of course for a fair amount of money)

best wishes,

Hi Altrea... Sorry, I did not mean to offend anyone or cause and trouble. The reason why I wrote the sentence "Please help me ASAP" is because I have a assignment submission due in a week and I have a lot to work.

Coming to Uninstalling the Skype... I tried to change the port. However, when I type in any other port number and click save an error message is displayed saying something like invalid... So, I just uninstalled it.

Thanks a lot for immediate reply and help with the configuration of VMware.

By the way, does it make any difference if I've installed XAMPP 1.8.1. Just some info.

I'm using Windows 7 64-Bit. so, can you please help me with how to configure Skype as well.. Thanks again...

That doesn't matter for me or this board here. You don't pay anything for getting volunteer support here.
Writing those sentences can result in the opposite, not getting or getting later support here. So please don't do that.

!? It is just one tick in the advanced configuration menu of Skype. You don't need to define a different port manually.

Hi Forsak3n,

Not sure if you sorted this, I had the same prob.
All I had to do was stop Skype starting automatically with windows by logging into skype and in the top menu bar click

tools > options > General Settings > and untick the third option "start skype when windows starts"

hope that helps :) :) :)

Hi donz2013...

Thanks for the reply.. I always stop most of the unwanted programs like messengers (Skype included) and players from starting when Windows boots up and never let programs auto login. So, I had to uninstall Skype. I'll try the Port change thing that Altrea suggested and also try your solution once again and see if it works.. Thank you :D
