Problems starting Apache

Postby craigrsaunders » 15. February 2013 04:18

I've just installed XAMPP 1.8.1 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T530i running Windows 7 Pro 64bit OS. I haven't been able to get Apache up and running yet. I've been able to change the symptoms with various changes.

I was able to get Apache to start when I ran the XAMPP Control Panel using compatibility settings for XP sp2 but it would halt immediately and the Apache Error log would show that it received a halt signal and shut down successfully. When I subsequently turned off the Norton Internet Smart Firewall, it would hang after attempting to start Apache, with no messages in the Apache error log.

I have tried everything that I can think of and I don't believe that I've gotten any closer to figuring out the problem, much less resolving it. I'm completely stuck so if I can't find someone who can help me figure out the problem, I'm going to be forced to give up on xampp and try other ampp stacks.

I'm so frustrated and surprised to find myself in this situation because all my past experience with xampp has been without exception, the best I've had with any open source app, if not *any* app.

I have quit out of skype, turned off the smart firewall in Norton Internet Security settings, running XAMPP Control Panel as administrator, the control panel detects status change of Apache as running and then immediately a status change to stopped. The Control Panel shows several lines of error messages in red saying
7:31:27 PM [Apache] Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.
7:31:27 PM [Apache] This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies,
7:31:27 PM [Apache] improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
7:31:27 PM [Apache] Check the "/xampp/apache/logs/error.log" file
7:31:27 PM [Apache] and the Windows Event Viewer for more clues

There were no messages in the Apache error log.

Hi craigrsaunders,

A short salutation is an act of politeness. Even if the internet is an virtual area, there is always a human being behind the screen. A polite beginning helps to get polite answers too. Please keep that in mind if you start a new thread. Thank you.

Please execute the file \xampp\apache_start.bat and tell us which messages you get to identify your issue.

best wishes,
Altrea

Hi Altrea,

Thank you very much for a reply. My apologies for not observing the social conventions of this forum. In the future, I will try to do so.

Running start_apache.bat and watching the messages display should be a good next step in isolating the problem. I will do so asap.

Thanks,
Craig

Hi Altrea,

Thank you for your suggestion. When I run apache_start.bat, It looks like the line "apache\bin\httpd.exe" generates the Windows error "The system could not find the path specified"

It looks like the script recognizes that the line "apache\bin\httpd.exe" had an error and continues following the logic that the line "apache\bin\httpd.exe" failed, displays appropriate messages and exits.

I made a copy of apache_start.bat and changed "apache\bin\httpd.exe" to "C:\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exe" but continued to get the same behavior.

I ran the original script as a normal user and got some bizarre errors that implied some sort of format error in a command or statement. Same behavior with the script with the full path to httpd.exe

Hello,

To be clear, is it saying it cannot find the Apache executable or is it saying that there is an invalid path in the Apache configuration?

Also, could you post the entire XAMPP CP log window here?
