I re-installed xampp 1.8 and got this message when I clicked on the Admin button on the control panel.

Any suggestions?

Cannot connect: invalid settings.

phpMyAdmin tried to connect to he MySQL server and the server rejected the connection. You should check host username and Password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server

Here is a little history. I deleted Xampp and re-installed it. This error came up after the re-installation.

I went to the browser and replaced "localhost" with 127.0.0.1 and I was able to access phpMyAdmin. Why won't it connect through the Xampp control panel?

I would check your HOSTS file to make sure localhost is mapped correctly (or at all).

Should the file only be checked or some settings as well?

That would be the first thing I recommend be checked and verified.
