url defaults to localhost/install/index.php

xampp Version 1.8.1 on Windows 7 Pro

404 errors galore

For some reason whenever I type in localhost as my url it 'automajically' changes to localhost/index/index.php which of course doesn't exist.

When I navigate to localhost/admin and I land in a directory tree (it is supposed to allow me to log in the the admin console).

My testing server is a webassist powerstore identical to one I set up online at davidlewis.id.au

I ftp'd it to the htdocs folder using filezilla client and then configured the site and mysql database via the admin console without any problems. I can log in to phpmyadmin without any problems, my database and tables are as expected.

Thought I had it licked late last night but I was either delusional or hallucinating, or both ;-}

I have read that I can create a sub-directory in htdocs but I don't think this is a solution (but graphically to make it look like it does on the remote server in a public_html folder).

You should ask there (whatever "webassist powerstore" means), as this is not a Xampp issue.
