enable uploading of .zip files

Problems with the Linux version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

enable uploading of .zip files

Postby mths » 07. December 2012 15:59

I cannot upload .zip files in phpmyadmin only .gz and uncompressed files. I did not have this problem in older versions. How can I enable this?

Is this the error message you got:
You attempted to load file with unsupported compression (application/zip). Either support for it is not implemented or disabled by your configuration

"uhhhh" - requires research - and testing fixes.

I don't make this software, nor does the XAMPP team - it all comes from the same Open Source projects 'source code' - they (the XAMPP project assemblers) compile and configure - THEN I and others figure out what went wrong or was omitted. I "knew" what the likely problem was when you posted; for some reason, the PHP extension "zip.so" does not work on 1.8.0/1.8.1 - I found that out trying to fix Moodle (i didn't write that either NOR am I a user - but I got it sorted)
I also had to replicate your problem.

Now I am trying to see if there is a fix.

You can see that conversation thread by using 'moodle' in the Forum Search Box

You are welcome to buy me a few beers to recover later however...

OK - AND - the answer is -

The zip.so object has issues in those versions (1.8.0 & 1.8.1) when you directly link it via php.ini - PHP bombs out. My guess is that the XAMPP 'configurators' grokked that out and commented it out in php.ini. Looks like a bad compile.

At this moment - you have two/three options - I can't say what your best one is -

A. use tar.gz compression for .SQL files. (should work)

B. Switch to XAMPP 1.7.7 (was working with zip.so)

C. Build a lamp stack via apt-get/yum etc from repositories.

D. Hang out and see if JonB (or someone else) can get a fresh compile for zip.so working for either of those versions.

E. See if JonB can 'back into' a fix with a 'midnight parts shop' repair...

~ tada ~

Hi, sorry for sneaking in. But I would like to ask if my problem correlate to this topic (so I can stay tuned). I try to install oxwall and right in the first step it tells me:

"Your hosting account doesn't meet the following requirements:
zip PHP extension not installed"

Is this probably the same problem or is this with all LAMPP versions the same (so no reason to switch back to 1.7.7 as one way to solve it like you proposed?

Noooo - please read carefully - 1.7.7 and earlier versions of lampp have zip.so - there is no 'probable' about this 1.8.0 & 1.8.1 have a flawed version

Thank you for your answer.
As it looks that 1.8.0/.1 will not work for me, do you think that a, lets say 1.8.2 will correct this? I would rather like to use 1.7.7 (and maybe later go to 1.8.2) instead of install all manually "apt-get install apache2 ..."

@ novize -

instead of install all manually

As far as I know - all you have to do is extract lampp, and run it - the whole point for lampp being: there is no installation.

"apt-get install apache2 ..."

You can't upgrade lampp in that fashion. The reason XAMPP/lampp is so easy to install is that it is NOT a 'LAMP' stack that has to be installed piece by piece. It is a bash script that runs by calling executables. Look at the file '/op/lampp/lampp'.

That said, all that is needed to remove XAMPP is the stuuf given on the XAMPP for Linux page
To uninstall XAMPP just type in this command:

rm -rf /opt/lampp

The end.

There's also nothing at all to prevent you from building a real LAMP stack via apt-get.

Good Luck

Thanks for the many answers and research. I will rest and accept the flawed nature of this world. Options A and D are totally acceptable for me. As is buying JonB a beer when I meet him (in a place where beer is sold).

@mths

OK -

Have a good time with XAMPP/lampp. You could just buy a stranger a 'whatever' as a random act of kindness. That's always a good thing to do. I have bought many strangers a round just like that - going out after solving a big problem or a good techie conversation and toasting my Internet friends I will never see.

Some years ago, I had 4 'Desperado' beers overnighted to me by a grateful individual - from Madrid to Florida. Nice, huh?

Reflecting on that -

Cheers Mate! (I am going to print this out and take it around the corner to have one or two...)
