Error log looks OK but server still not serving

Postby toroandbruin » 09. November 2012 01:35

This is Xampp Version 1.8.1 and Control Panel v3.1.0 Beta 6.

I have tried to install Xampp for Windows on a 14gb flash drive. The goal is to use it both on my Windows 7 machine at home and on various classrooom machines which are on a Windows Server 12 network.

At home, both the Microsoft C++ and Xampp for Windows seemed to download and install without a problem. The Xampp control panel did show some needed ports already in use but those errors went away when I changed the port numbers.

Clicking on the file "test_php" resulted in the message "[SUCCESS]: Test for the php.exe successfully passed. Good!" Also, the "XAMPP for Windows" pages at localhost loaded OK, and I think they are all PHP files.

HOWEVER, no other PHP files will work. In the htdocs directory I have tried opening the very simplest, most standard "Hello World" PHP file using both Explorer and Firefox and it just shows the PHP script when it opens. And no, I haven't used shortcuts for the opening and closing PHP tags.

Log files don't show any error messages. Well, they do when there is an error that Wampp recognizes. For example I am at present on a classroom computer which stops Apache from running a few seconds after it has started even though I've tried to get the system's security to allow it. But that's another whole problem.

For now I am just concentrating on getting this to work on my home machine. Help!

Hi toroandbruin (there is ALWAYS time for a short salutation, especially if you are asking for help on a volunteer community board. It's a matter of politeness),

How do you "open" the php file to test it?
Which address does your browser at the moment you are getting your php plain text?

best wishes,
Altrea

Thank you for the quick response.

Today my HelloWorld.php got an empty page. The address was file:///J:/xampp/htdocs/EXPERIMENTS/HelloWorld.php. "Localhost" addresses are not working today.

In addition, I tried one of the xampp php files, file:///J:/xampp/htdocs/index.php
This got a page saying: "Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation :-("

Upon starting up the Xampp Control Panel this morning I got the following error alert:

httpd.exe - No Disk

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR4."

The Event Viewer showed "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk6\DR6."

Nevertheless, the Control Panel did come up. Apache, MySQL and FileZilla were yellow, green, green respectively and looked like they were started because they had a Stop button.
Mercury and Tomcat had no color and the Actions button still said Start. Control panel messages indicated that the Apache, Mysql and Filezilla statuses were running.

At present all Apache, MySQL and FileZilla are running as a process rather than a service (in other words have a red X under Modules Service). Yesterday they had all been successfully changed to a service. MySql and FileZilla came up with red X's this morning; so I changed Apache back to run as a process, too, to see if that would help, and re-booted. But PHP still wouldn't work.

Then after some time all 3 processes quit working.

Windows Event Viewer showed a lot of info. regarding Apache and Xampp. I'll try to paste it below but there might not be space.
(By the way, a CHKDSK showed no problems on the thumb drive.) I hope this will give enough clues that you can tell what is wrong.

Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Apache HTTP Server because of this error.

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR4."

I had the same issue as above, I went back and deleted everything from usb drive, then re-installed. When installing it will ask if you want to use drive letters. Choose no if you're installing on a usb/thumb drive.

Hello,

If you want to access a php file, you need to pass it through a web server, you cannot access it directly (http://localhost/EXPERIMENTS/HelloWorld.php).

It sounds like the drive letter changed on your drive. You should consider the portable version or rerun the "setup_xampp.bat" to correct any changed paths.
