I see from searching the forum that many have experienced this problem and some have been able to resolve it. After reading the responses and going to a page that is frequently referenced [http://community.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=50970], that I still could not understand how to correct the problem.
After typing in http://localhost I get the following message:

I have not been able to find the following words in the xxamp scripts.
<Directory "/opt/lampp/phpmyadmin">
have also not been able to find the above words in the "httpd-xampp.conf" script following this path:
/xampp/apache/conf/extra
What am I doing wrong?
